What should you do first if you spill water on your laptop?
- To start with, do not switch it on again! Assume luck won’t be on your side. Even if you manage to power it on initially, if there is significant damage, it will shut down quickly. Do not assume you are an exception. Continuing to power it on could result in further harm. Keep it turned off for a full 24 hours.
- Position your laptop facing downwards with the screen fully open. Forget about rice, special pouches, or hairdryers. Just rely on gravity. During the time your laptop is switched off, the objective is to allow the water to drain away from the motherboard and internal components.
- After the 24-hour period, attempt to power it back on. If you are fortunate, the harm will have been prevented. In the worst case scenario, perhaps only a few keys or the keyboard may not be functioning, indicating that they absorbed the water and protected the laptop.
